Which investment type typically carries the least risk?

The question of the most and least risky investment option that carries the least risk is a matter of controversy. Although there are a number of different types of investments that carry varying levels of risk, there are a few that are considered to be at the very low risk end of the spectrum. Of course, the more extreme the risk factor associated with an investment, the greater the perceived risk of loss, which in turn increases the perceived risk of gain for investors.

Investing in equities, bonds, and other forms of fixed assets can be considered to be the safest investment type. When you invest in these types of investments you essentially get to own a piece of the company and therefore the underlying asset itself. Therefore, if that asset decreases in value (as is often the case) so too will your investment. These are the types of investments that are typically viewed as the safest because they offer a guaranteed return, but are also subject to risk as is the case with any other form of investment.

The riskiest forms of investing are typically found with the purchase and sale of currencies. It is in these types of investment transactions that a potential investor must take the greatest amount of risk in order to obtain a profit. These include the purchase and sale of currencies that are highly sensitive to the economic conditions of the country from which they originate. If the country’s economy experiences a decline in purchasing power then there is a great likelihood that the value of the currency will decline as well. With the rise and fall of currency rates, it is not always in the best interest of investors to purchase the currency with the highest value because the investor’s profit potential is decreased significantly.
